The Rotunda’s circular design and massive dome make it one of the oldest surviving examples of Roman engineering. The Byzantine mosaics that remain today provide a glimpse into the artistic evolution of the late Roman and early Christian periods. Following the Ottoman conquest of Thessaloniki in 1430, the Rotunda was transformed into a mosque, known as the Suleiman Celebi Mosque. A minaret, which still stands today, was added, marking its Islamic period. After Thessaloniki’s liberation in 1912, the building was reclaimed as a Christian site, eventually serving as both a museum and a place of worship.
The Rotunda’s unique history makes it one of the few monuments in the world to have served as a pagan temple, a Christian church, and an Islamic mosque, highlighting Thessaloniki’s multicultural past.
