ʻIolani Palace was the site of one of the most heartbreaking moments in Hawaiian history—the overthrow of Queen Liliʻuokalani in 1893. The queen, who had ascended the throne after her brother King Kalākaua’s passing, sought to restore power to the Hawaiian people through a new constitution. However, American and European business interests, fearing a loss of influence, orchestrated a coup that led to the monarchy’s downfall.

Following the overthrow, Queen Liliʻuokalani was imprisoned within the palace walls for nearly eight months. Confined to an upstairs bedroom, she spent her time composing music, including the famous song “Aloha ʻOe,” a poignant farewell to her kingdom. The room remains preserved as a solemn reminder of this period in Hawaiian history.

After the monarchy’s dissolution, ʻIolani Palace was repurposed for various governmental functions, serving as the Capitol of the Republic, Territory, and State of Hawaiʻi until 1969. Over time, much of its original furniture was removed or auctioned off, but dedicated restoration efforts have since returned many artifacts to their rightful home.
