World City Trail runs self-guided scavenger hunts in 26 Italian cities, from Bolzano, Trento and Trieste in the north to Palermo, Catania and Syracuse in Sicily and Cagliari in Sardinia. Every city has three games: a scavenger hunt with a riddle at each stop, an outdoor escape game with a puzzle at every landmark, and an audio walking tour with stories and no puzzles.
Each scavenger hunt has 10 stops and takes about 2 hours, or 3 hours in Rome, Florence, Milan, Verona and Cagliari. The walks are short: under 2 km in Modena and Parma, 5.5 km in Rome.

Best for a first trip to Italy
Rome

Florence
Solve riddles at the Duomo, Piazza della Signoria, Santa Croce, the Uffizi and the Ponte Vecchio.

Bergamo
The game stays inside the walled upper town: through Porta San Giacomo to Piazza Vecchia, the Campanone bell tower and Santa Maria Maggiore.
Best for food lovers
Modena
The short route (1.7 km) passes the Ghirlandina tower, the cathedral and Piazza Grande, a UNESCO World Heritage site together, and the Albinelli market, the city’s historic food market.
Best for Sicily and the sea
Syracuse
The game explores Ortigia, the island that holds the old town of Syracuse: the Temple of Apollo, the statue of Archimedes, the Fountain of Diana, the cathedral, the Arethusa Spring and Castello Maniace at the water’s edge.
A self-guided scavenger hunt is the easiest way to see an Italian city’s main sights in two to three hours, without a guide or a fixed start time. Italian old towns are compact, and our routes link their piazzas, churches, palaces and bridges in a single walk.
Compared with a guided tour, you choose the pace, the start time and the order of the stops, and there is no group of strangers to keep up with. The riddles make you look closely at façades, statues and inscriptions most visitors walk past, and the stories and legends that follow explain what you just found.
One app works in all 26 cities, which suits the way many people travel in Italy: a few days in Florence with side trips to Pisa and Siena, or a loop through Bologna, Modena, Parma, Ravenna and Rimini in Emilia-Romagna.
For a first visit, Rome is the best choice: its route runs from Castel Sant’Angelo past the Pantheon to the Colosseum. Florence suits art lovers, while Bergamo, Modena and Siena have the shortest walks and work well with children or for a relaxed half day.
Most Italian scavenger hunts take about 2 hours, including 20 to 50 minutes of actual walking. Rome, Florence, Milan, Verona and Cagliari take about 3 hours.

Yes. The riddles are solved by observation and logic, not prior knowledge, so children can play along with an adult, and everyone can follow on their own phone. For young children, pick a short route such as Bergamo, Modena or Parma, each 2 km or less.
All 26 Italian cities can be played in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Dutch. Florence and Venice are also available in Portuguese and Chinese, and Milan and Rome in Polish.
